‘Aspects of the Historical Landscape of North Craven: from Balks and Bercaries to Butts and Beastgaits’
Tickets £6; 7.30pm
Only a few isolated areas of Craven can be described as a natural landscape. Most of the land has been managed and modified through the centuries as farmers, landowners and institutions such as monastic foundations worked the land to maximum advantage. The North Craven landscape can be described as a kaleidoscope where clear signs of successive layers of occupation and land use can still be seen on the ground. This talk will consider various forms of evidence that illustrate how the land has been used in the medieval and post-medieval periods, including clues on the ground and in documents.
