Workshop:
Brian Aldred
Learn how to print with moveable type using an old hand press

'Well-known printer and print historian, Brian Aldred from Addingham, will be running a printing workshop in The Folly, Settle on Wednesday 16 May from 2 pm to 4 pm. Brian will be bringing along a pair of portable presses which he has painstakingly restored and a selection of blocks and type. Participants will be able to have a go at setting type using an old-style compositor's 'stick' and choosing ornaments from Brian's collection to produce their own personalised piece of text which they can then 'pull' on the press.

Craven Herald voucher weekend: free entry with the special voucher printed in Craven Herald (17 May edition): further details to follow and in the Craven Herald. The voucher entitles 2 people to free entry on either

  • Saturday 19th May (when afternoon teas will be available for a small fee), or
  • Sunday 20th May (when well-known local printer, Brian Aldred, will be giving visitors the chance to create their own bookmarks and cards on his old parlour press)

Fri 31-Aug-2012Settle-Carlisle railway evening: 'Along the Settle-Carlisle'; 7.30pm
Nick Jones and Alan Daltrey will be giving a presentation of their artistic and literary work relating to the line, entitled 'Along the Settle-Carlisle';.
Tickets, priced at £6, including refreshments, can be obtained direct from The Folly or by ringing 01729 822893. Owing to limited space, tickets should be booked in advance.

The Folly in Settle will be taking part in Heritage Open Days. On Sunday, 9 September from 12.30 to 4.30 there will be free admission, together with special quizzes and activities and a Folly Mouse Trail for children.
